Russell, a small community on the Bay of Islands once was the capital of NZ. The community burnt to the ground with only two buildings left standing, one of which was the Anglican Church. The fire started by one of the Maori Chief’s, and supported by many of the chiefs, was due to conflict with the treaty signed in 1940, granting NZ as a sovereign nation. As part of its history is the infamous name of “hell hole of the Pacific”. This title was earned due to the lawless of the town. Pubs, brothels and guns were the commodities of trade.

While much more tamer these days, it is a fun to wander around the area.
